About This Project
What is Voyica?
Voyica is a free travel and relocation comparison tool that lets you search and filter 340 cities across 102+ countries using 45 adjustable range filters, 10 boolean toggles, and an AI-powered natural language search. Each city carries 73+ data points covering cost of living, safety, weather, food quality, internet speed, nightlife, walkability, healthcare, and more. Users can compare destinations side by side, plan group trips collaboratively, and switch between tourist, digital nomad, and relocator cost modes. The interactive map interface shows results in real time as you adjust filters. Type something like "warm, cheap, good nightlife near the beach" and the AI translates it into structured filter settings automatically.
The data: 340 cities, 73+ metrics per city
Every city in the app carries over 73 individual data points across cost of living, weather, safety, food, infrastructure, activities, and more. The data was compiled from a mix of public datasets, government indices, and editorial research. Here is where each category comes from:
- Cost of Living & Rental Cost — Numbeo Cost of Living Index, supplemented with Expatistan and local expat community data. Rental costs reflect average 1-bedroom apartment prices in city centers.
- Internet Speed — Ookla Speedtest Global Index and Cable.co.uk worldwide broadband speed league tables. Values represent median download speeds in Mbps.
- Safety & Tourist Safety — Global Peace Index (Institute for Economics & Peace), US State Dept travel advisories, and Numbeo Crime Index. Tourist Safety is a separate score accounting for pickpocketing, scams, and tourist-targeted crime.
- Healthcare — WHO Health System Rankings, Numbeo Healthcare Index, and Legatum Prosperity Index health pillar.
- Weather — Climate-Data.org historical averages, Weather Atlas, and World Meteorological Organization records. Includes sunny days per year, rainy days, and average high temperatures. When a travel month is selected, monthly estimates use sinusoidal interpolation based on latitude and seasonal patterns.
- Transit, Walkability & Bikeability — Moovit Public Transit Index, Walk Score (where available), urban planning reports, and Copenhagenize Index for bike infrastructure.
- Nightlife & Late Night Culture — Time Out city guides, TripAdvisor destination rankings, and Nomad List community ratings. Late Night is measured as the typical last-call hour (0-6am).
- Food Scene — Time Out, TripAdvisor, and Nomad List culinary ratings measuring overall diversity and quality of dining.
- Iconic Food Cities, Must-Try Dishes & Restaurants — TasteAtlas Awards 25/26 — 100 Best Food Cities in the World rankings. Includes city food ratings, top must-try dishes with individual scores, and iconic traditional restaurants as rated by the TasteAtlas community.
- Michelin Dining — Michelin restaurant density per capita, sourced from the official Michelin Guide and per-capita analysis by Chef's Pencil (June 2024). Scored 0-100 using a logarithmic scale where Kyoto (the world's densest Michelin city) anchors the top. Cities in countries without Michelin Guide coverage score 0.
- Cowork Spaces — Coworker.com density data and Nomad List workspace counts.
- Air Quality — IQAir World Air Quality Index and WHO ambient air pollution database (PM2.5 annual means).
- Flight Cost Estimates — Aggregated from Google Flights, Kayak, and Skyscanner averages (economy round-trip). Estimates factor in your selected departure region, airport hub status, distance, and country-specific cost multipliers.
- Language Proficiency — Sourced from authoritative language institutions: EF English Proficiency Index (English), Instituto Cervantes (Spanish), Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie (French), CPLP & Camões Institute (Portuguese), HSK / China Ministry of Education (Mandarin), and ALECSO (Arabic). Covers 6 languages.
- Visa-Free Days — US passport holder visa-free stay durations sourced from Henley Passport Index and embassy data.
- Coffee Culture — Scored using the 2026 Global Coffee City Power Ranking, synthesized from USDA Foreign Agricultural Service World Markets and Trade reports (Dec 2025), International Coffee Organization (ICO) consumption data, the World's 100 Best Coffee Shops 2026 audit, Allegra World Coffee Portal Project Café 2026 market sizing, and the National Coffee Association (NCA) / Specialty Coffee Association (SCA) global estimates. How data was collected
The dataset was built in stages. A base set of 84 cities across major travel destinations was compiled first, with each city manually researched against the sources listed above. Additional batches expanded coverage to 340 cities total, adding underrepresented regions in the US, Canada, Asia, and smaller European and Latin American destinations. Each batch followed the same sourcing methodology to keep metrics consistent.
Monthly weather data was generated using sinusoidal models calibrated to each city's latitude, known seasonal extremes, and hemisphere. Flight cost estimates use a formula based on great-circle distance, regional airport hub multipliers, and country-level pricing adjustments.
AI-powered search
The "Ask AI" search bar sends your natural language query to an AI assistant that interprets what you're looking for and translates it into structured filter settings. For example, "somewhere warm and cheap with good food in Europe" gets turned into specific ranges for temperature, cost of living, and food score, plus a region filter.
How scoring works
When you activate a filter, each city gets a normalized score (0-100%) based on how well it matches your preferences. The scoring system has three modes:
- Explore — Default mode. Shows you how cities compare across the metric with a 1.5x weight. Great for discovery.
- Priority — Doubles the weight (2x) for this metric, making it more important in the overall score.
- Must Have — Hard filter. Cities outside your chosen range are excluded entirely.
Multiple active filters combine into a weighted average. The map markers scale in size and color based on match quality. Short Stay mode gives a small bonus to nightlife, food, and walkability. Extended Stay mode favors internet speed, cowork spaces, nomad visas, and lower costs.
Other features
- City Comparer — Pick a city you already like and find destinations with similar vibes using a similarity algorithm that compares all 30+ numeric metrics.
- Region & Country Filter — Exclude entire continents or specific countries from results.
- Month Picker — Select a travel month to get weather estimates specific to that time of year.
- Favorites — Save destinations to a favorites list that persists in your browser.
- Surprise Me — Get a random well-scoring destination based on your current filters.
Who is Voyica for?
Voyica is designed for digital nomads researching their next base, remote workers evaluating relocation options, expats comparing cost of living between cities, and travelers who want data-driven destination recommendations rather than generic listicles. The platform is especially useful for people weighing multiple factors at once — for example, finding a city that is affordable, has fast internet, good food, and is safe for solo travelers. Group trip planners can invite friends to a shared dashboard where everyone votes on destinations based on their own priorities.
