Both score 95/100 for beaches and 65/100 for safety in Voyica's data, which ties them for the top safety score on this list, and living there like a local costs only about $1,100–$1,200 a month. If you just want the best sand and English spoken everywhere, Nassau in the Bahamas has the highest beach score here (98/100). It's also the most expensive pick by a long way, at about $2,849 a month.

We ranked nine Caribbean destinations from Voyica's city dataset using three things: beaches, safety and cost. Safety scores combine the Global Peace Index, US State Department advisories and the Numbeo Crime Index. Cost figures come from Numbeo and Expatistan and cover one person, including a one-bedroom apartment outside the centre. All of that is pulled together on Voyica's city pages. 1. Punta Cana, Dominican Republic

   Punta Cana is the best all-round answer. It scores 95/100 for beaches and 65/100 for safety, the joint-highest safety score in this ranking, and costs about $1,180 a month per Voyica's city data. Most of the safety comes from how the area is laid out: big resort zones along Bávaro and Cap Cana, with an airport about 20 minutes away. The trade-off is that English sits at only 15/100 outside the hotels, so download offline Spanish in your translation app before you go. US passport holders get 90 days visa-free, per the Henley Passport Index.

2. Cozumel, Mexico

   Cozumel has the same scores as Punta Cana (95/100 beaches, 65/100 safety) and costs a little less, at about $1,100 a month with rent around $536. The island sits on the Mesoamerican Reef, so the snorkelling and diving are among the best in the region. It's also small enough to get around by scooter or the ferry to Playa del Carmen. Internet is the weak point at 37 Mbps (Ookla), so remote workers should test their accommodation's wifi before booking a long stay. US visitors get 180 days visa-free.

3. Nassau, Bahamas

   Nassau has the best beaches in Voyica's data (98/100) and the most English (95/100), which makes it the easiest island on this list to get around. It's a short flight from Florida. The safety score is 50/100, so spend your time on Cable Beach, Paradise Island and the day-trip cays rather than walking around after dark. Costs are the highest in this ranking: about $2,849 a month, with one-bedroom rent around $2,000. There's also a digital nomad visa if you want to stay longer than the 240 visa-free days.

4. Montego Bay, Jamaica

   Montego Bay combines 92/100 beaches with the joint-best food score here (72/100). Jerk from the Scotchies-style roadside pits is a reason to come on its own. English is at 90/100, and the cost is a reasonable $1,329 a month. Safety is 48/100, so book licensed JUTA taxis or use resort transfers rather than flagging down rides. Jamaica also offers a digital nomad visa, and US visitors get 180 days visa-free.

5. Roatán, Honduras

   Roatán scores 92/100 for beaches and 55/100 for safety, which is higher than Nassau, Montego Bay or San Juan. It costs about $1,200 a month, and English is at 60/100 thanks to the island's Creole heritage. West Bay and West End are where to base yourself for shore diving on the reef, and water taxis connect the two. It gets you most of what Cozumel offers with fewer crowds.

6. San Juan, Puerto Rico

   San Juan is the most convenient island for Americans. It's a US territory, so there's no passport check (Voyica lists 365 days), it has the fastest internet in this group at 119 Mbps, and its food score is tied for best at 72/100. It ranks lower because its safety score of 38/100 is the lowest here, and it costs about $2,021 a month. Stay in Old San Juan, Condado or Ocean Park, and take Ubers at night rather than walking between neighbourhoods.

7. Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic

   Santo Domingo is a city break more than a beach trip, but it still scores 85/100 for beaches (Boca Chica is close by) and 52/100 for safety. At about $1,060 a month, with rent around $374, it's one of the cheapest places on this list. The Zona Colonial has the oldest European-built streets in the Americas. English is at just 10/100, so learn some basic Spanish.

8. Havana, Cuba

   Havana has the third-highest safety score here (60/100) and costs about $1,049 a month, with rent around $323. Beaches score only 75/100, though Playas del Este is a short drive away. Internet is very slow at 4 Mbps, so plan to be offline. US entry rules aren't confirmed in Voyica's data, and Americans face specific travel restrictions, so check the current State Department guidance before you book anything.

9. Utila, Honduras

   Utila is the cheapest place in this ranking at about $600 a month. Nassau costs about $2,250 a month more. It's last because its beach score is only 25/100 and safety is 48/100. Utila is a dive-certification island, not a sand-and-sunlounger one. If you want to get PADI-certified on a budget, though, it's hard to beat.

For a first Caribbean trip, choose between Nassau and Punta Cana. Nassau is easier: English is at 95/100, flights from the East Coast are short, and the beaches score 98/100. Punta Cana is safer and cheaper, and works best if you're happy to spend most of your time inside a resort zone. San Juan is the simplest for paperwork because it needs no passport, but its 38/100 safety score means you should stick to the main tourist neighbourhoods. On safety alone, the order from Voyica's scores is Punta Cana and Cozumel (65/100 each), then Havana (60), Roatán (55), Santo Domingo (52), Nassau (50), Montego Bay and Utila (48 each), and San Juan (38). None of these scores is high, so the same rules apply everywhere: use registered taxis or ride-hailing, don't leave valuables on the beach, avoid walking in unlit areas at night, and read the current US State Department advisory for the country. When to go, what it costs and getting around

When to go: December to April is the dry season and the best weather, which also makes it peak price season. Hurricane season officially runs from June 1 to November 30, with the highest risk from August to October. Late April to early June is a good compromise: the weather is still dry and hotels are cheaper. If you travel in hurricane season, buy travel insurance that covers storms.

What it costs: Voyica's monthly figures are for living like a local with a long-term rental, and they range from about $600 in Utila to about $2,849 in Nassau. Use them to compare places: a destination at $1,100 a month will be cheaper on the ground than one at $2,000. Getting around: On Cozumel and Roatán, rent a scooter or golf cart. Montego Bay and Nassau work best with licensed taxis. In San Juan and Santo Domingo, ride-hailing is the easiest option. In Punta Cana, prebook an airport transfer, because most resorts are spread out along the coast.
